The Resident Engineer gives the following facts us to

the consumption of water

During the first two perions the Supply was given for 24 hours,

and during the succeeding periods from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. only;

or for sixteen hours only. So that by shutting off the supply,

for one third of a day, the consumption was reduced by about

one fourth.

The hourly consumption, during the period of constant-

supply, was at the rate of 14,600 §llonsper hour.

During the period of intermittat-supply, the consumption

was at the rate of 92,600 gallons an hour; or not quite ten

per cent more than when the supply was constant.

The effect

of shutting off the water, from a part of the town only, for

one third of the day, differed. little, in its effect on the

reservoirs, from that, which would have taken place had the

water been flowing steadily to waste, hour by hour, into the
